About Venues of Note

Some of the best places to hold an event weren't built for events. Museums, galleries, theatres, historic houses and other distinctive places have remarkable spaces, and many of them hire those spaces out. The money often goes straight back into their work. But their hire pages can be hard to find, spread across hundreds of separate websites.

This directory brings them together in one place.

What we list

Venues of Note lists places whose identity adds something to an event: their history, their purpose, their setting or what people come to see. That suits a board meeting or an away day as well as a wedding or a party. So that it's a fair test rather than a matter of taste, a venue qualifies if it is at least one of these:

The venue also needs spaces that anyone can hire, and a page on its own website about hiring them. We don't list hotels, conference centres, pubs, restaurants or purpose-built event venues unless they also pass one of the tests above, such as a hotel in a listed building. Not sure if yours counts? Ask us.

Most of our listings so far are museums, galleries, theatres, arts centres and heritage sites, and we're adding more kinds of venue.

How it works

Each listing links to the organisation's own venue hire page. We don't take bookings or commission. Enquire with the venue directly.

How listings work

Most listings are free: we add venues from public sources and link to their hire pages. Venues can pay for a full listing, which adds photos, capacities and a description and lists them above free listings, including on our occasion pages (weddings, conferences, Christmas parties and more), where any venue can appear. They can also pay for a boost, which puts them first on their pages for a set period with a "Featured" label. Within each group, venues are listed A to Z.

Paying doesn't change what we say about a venue: venues write their own descriptions, and we check them before they go live. Upgrade your listing.

Get listed or correct a listing

If you work for a listed venue, you can claim your listing free to correct it and add your facilities. If your organisation hires out space and isn't listed, list your venue free.
